National Shooting Sports Month - Celebrating 10 years

Celebrating 10 Years of National Shooting Sports Month

This year marks the 10th National Shooting Sports Month® and as America celebrates its 250th anniversary, there’s never been a better time to reconnect with the traditions, friendships and memories that bring us back to the range.

By the time August arrives, summer has a way of feeling full. The family vacation has come and gone. The kids are squeezing every last adventure out of their break before another school year begins. Weekends disappear into backyard cookouts, home projects, road trips and visits with relatives you haven’t seen in far too long.

Life doesn’t slow down in August. If anything, it speeds up and somewhere in the middle of all that, it’s surprisingly easy for the things we enjoy most to quietly drift into the background. The range bag stays in the closet another weekend. The rifle you planned to sight in can wait until fall. The pistol you meant to practice with will still be there next month. Not because you’ve lost your enthusiasm, but because life has a way of convincing us there will always be more time.

That’s why National Shooting Sports Month matters.

For 10 years, it has served as something much more meaningful than a campaign on the calendar. It’s become an annual reminder to press pause on the distractions, to make time for the hobbies, the people and the traditions that deserve a place in our lives.

Because the best days at the range are rarely about the target alone. They’re about the conversations between relays. The unmistakable ring of steel echoing across the firing line. The smile that follows someone’s first bullseye. The quiet confidence that comes from improving one shot at a time. The stories that begin before the first round is fired and continue long after the firearms have been cased for the drive home.

Those moments don’t happen by accident. They happen because someone decided to make time for them. That’s what National Shooting Sports Month has been celebrating for the past decade. As America commemorates its 250th anniversary this year, this idea feels especially fitting.

For 250 years, Americans have passed traditions from one generation to the next. Some are shared around dinner tables, around campfires. Some are passed along on quiet Saturday mornings at the local range. A grandfather patiently explaining sight alignment to his granddaughter. Friends challenging one another with good-natured competition. An experienced shooter taking the time to help someone who has always been curious but never knew where to begin.

History isn’t carried forward only through books or monuments. It’s carried forward through experiences. Through mentorship. Through time spent together.

Now it’s our turn to continue that tradition. That’s one of the beautiful things about August. There isn’t one right way to celebrate.

Here are Just a Few Ways to Celebrate National Shooting Sports Month

Shoot the #RangeChallenge Target

Discover the fun of taking on the National Shooting Sports Month #RangeChallenge, comparing scores, encouraging one another and celebrating progress instead of perfection. Share your experience on Instagram with the #RangeChallenge hashtag for a chance to win one of eight $500 gift cards that will be drawn throughout the month.

Visit Ranges, Retailers and Clubs Near You

Find a participating range near you and reach out to see what they have planned for the month. If there isn’t a host listed near you, head to your local range to enjoy some trigger time and let them know.

Print Free Targets

Print this year’s special America 250 commemorative targets, and turn an ordinary afternoon into a friendly competition and a keepsake you’ll remember long after August has passed.

Bring Someone New

There’s no better time to introduce someone new to the shooting sports. Whether it’s a neighbor, coworker or family member, invite them to join you. They probably won’t remember every piece of instruction they received. They probably won’t remember every shot they fired. But years from now, they’ll remember how that day made them feel. Welcome, capable and confident. That’s how traditions begin.

Celebrate on Social Media

Share your range day photos and stories using #LetsGoShooting and #RangeChallenge to inspire others and show your support for the shooting sports community. Stay connected by following LetsGoShooting on Facebook | Instagram | X.

Don’t Miss this Moment

Every August, thousands of people across the country decide that life can wait for a few hours. That work emails can wait. That the lawn can wait. That the errands will still be there tomorrow. Instead, they choose to spend an afternoon doing something that challenges them, relaxes them and reconnects them with people they care about.

In a world that’s constantly asking for our attention, that’s something worth celebrating.

Throughout August, ranges across the country will once again welcome shooters of every experience level. There will be special events, opportunities to learn, friendly competitions, downloadable America 250 targets, the return of the #RangeChallenge, exciting giveaways and countless moments shared under the banners of #LetsGoShooting and the tagline “Let Freedom Plink.” Each activity is another invitation—not simply to participate in a campaign, but to become part of a nationwide celebration of safe, responsible and enjoyable shooting.

However you choose to celebrate, make it your own.

  • Meet an old friend at the range.
  • Bring a family member who’s been asking to go.
  • Take that class you’ve been putting off.
  • Print the commemorative targets.
  • Challenge yourself.
  • Challenge your friends.
  • Support your local range.
  • Or simply spend a few uninterrupted hours doing something you’ve loved all along.

Because before you know it, August will become September. Summer will give way to fall. The calendars will fill again, and life will move on, just as it always does. So make this one count.

We’ll see you at the range.

Let’s Go Shooting.

Let Freedom Plink.
